TOOTH EXTRACTIONS
Are you suffering from persistent toothache? It could be due to cavities, gum infections, a broken tooth, or decay.
Though most of these problems can be fixed with dental fillings, crowns, or medication, sometimes, a tooth extraction would be needed if the tooth is impaired beyond repair. At Ascend Dental Design, we perform safe and comfortable tooth extractions.
When Are Tooth Extractions Necessary?
Tooth extractions involve the removal of an entire tooth from its socket in the jawbone. It is generally recommended when tooth decay is deep and extensive, and no treatment options like fillings or root canal therapy can save the natural tooth. It is also performed when the tooth is severely infected or while undergoing orthodontic treatments to make space for properly aligning the other teeth.
The common situations when a dental extraction would be the perfect solution are as follows.
- The decay or infection runs deep into the gum
- There is a severe periodontal disease
- The tooth is cracked
- During orthodontic treatments to align crowded teeth
Tooth extractions can be either simple or surgical based on the location and condition of the tooth. A simple extraction is performed on teeth visible above the gum line. During the process, our dentist will loosen the tooth with an elevator and remove it with forceps. Surgical extractions are ideal if the tooth has broken off at the gum line or has not emerged correctly. It is performed by creating an incision into the gum, breaking the tooth into tiny portions, and taking it out.
What to Expect From a Tooth Extraction Surgery?
- The first step in a tooth extraction is taking an X-Ray of the affected tooth to evaluate the condition of the surrounding bone and the location of the tooth’s roots under the gum line.
- We will use the X-ray images obtained to determine the most suitable extraction technique and develop a detailed tooth extraction plan.
- We start the procedure by administering a local anesthetic or sedative to ensure comfortable and painless extraction.
- Depending on the tooth position and condition, we decide on a simple or surgical extraction and pull the tooth out.
- Once the tooth is removed successfully, gauze will be placed on the area to control bleeding.
- We may suture the area to speed up the healing of your gums and prescribe medications to reduce pain and prevent infection.
