Root canals are a procedure in which your dentist removes infected pulp from your tooth’s interior chamber. Without treatment, the inflamed or infected tissue may spread into the root of the tooth, causing an abscess to form. This results in toothache, swelling, and potentially the loss of the tooth.

A root canal procedure requires the dentist to thoroughly clean out the damaged area and eliminate all traces of infection so it doesn’t reoccur. Once the area has been disinfected and filled, the tooth is restored with a porcelain dental crown for durability and aesthetics.

Tooth extractions are a common procedure that is designed to remove a tooth from its socket within the gums. If tooth decay is left untreated for a period of time, the affected tooth can become damaged beyond repair. The decay can progress to the inner pulp of the tooth, which contains nerves, blood vessels, and other tissues. Once the bacteria has reached the pulp, patients will experience pain when eating or drinking hot or cold foods and drinks. Even something as basic as breathing can cause extreme discomfort. At this point, the dentist will recommend that the tooth be removed in order to protect the patient from future pain and infection. If the infected tooth is not extracted, the bacteria will spread to the other healthy teeth and gums, resulting in the need for additional treatments to help prevent gum disease and other complications.
