What Is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry administered by oral sedatives, nitrous oxide, IV sedation medications, or a combination of these can alleviate anxiety. They allow for a much more pleasant experience while undergoing your dental treatments. It is especially appropriate for young patients having trouble sitting still or for those nervous about going to the dentist.

You can opt for sedation dentistry if:

  • You have a terrible gag reflex.
  • You can't sit still in the chair.
  • You have a low pain threshold.
  • You have very sensitive teeth.
  • You are anxious about receiving dental care.
  • You need extensive dental work and want it accomplished with the slightest discomfort.

Going to the dentist should not be a dreadful experience. If you have dental fear, you can ask for sedation options for primary dental care such as regular teeth cleaning or advanced dental procedures like gum surgeries, tooth extractions, dental implant placements, etc.

What Are the Different Levels of Sedation?

Before deciding on the level of sedation you will need for your dental procedure, our dentist at Ascend Dental Design will discuss your sedation needs and medically evaluate you to determine if you are a good candidate for sedation dentistry.

Minimal Sedation

With minimal sedation, you are fully conscious but feel relaxed. This is achieved using nitrous oxide, also called laughing gas. This gas can possibly make you giggle when administered. Minimal sedation can also be achieved with an oral drug before the dental procedure.

Moderate Sedation

Moderate sedation can keep you awake but a little drowsy. And you may not remember everything or anything about the dental procedure. This kind of sedation is usually provided through a higher dose of oral medication in combination with nitrous oxide gas. Alternatively, higher doses of sedative medications can be delivered intravenously directly into the patient's cardiovascular system.

Are There Any Sedation Options for Extensive Procedures?

Besides minimal and moderate sedation, we also offer deep sedation for patients for multiple or extensive, invasive dental procedures. It can put the patient in a deep sleep and is carefully monitored by our dentists. Once the sedation wears off, the patient is not likely to remember anything about the dental procedure.
